Uploading Your Template

Copy your web pages and folders to your site root directory as you would to any other folder on your computer. All html files should be placed in the root folder of your web hosting, while other files must go to their designated folders.

In other words, you should keep the folder structure just as it was originally given to you in the zipped folders. All images should be located in "/images" directory, SWF movie files in "/flash", javascript files in /javascript, or /js, and so on.

If you are new to this, read some tutorials on website construction or practice on free hosting services like www.t35.com or www.webs.com.

If you meet our criteria, it is likely your works would be used in our designs or posted on our site. In return, we will add your site to the list of Coverday artists, whether your works are frequently used or not.

Fill out the application to send us links to your albums online, along with your contact information. All fields required.

Submission Guidelines:

Images must be your own original works.
They should be of high quality and can't contain watermarks.

I <3 Gmail

iBlog

Today, at 15:33 I created a Gmail account. At 16:30 I had all my hotmail messages forwarded to gmail (without leaving it), and desire to go back to Windows Live did not stir in my feminine chest.

Here's why....

I'm in love with my new Gmail account! It's clean and fast and looks exactly the way I want it to. One of the reasons I checked my hotmail account so rarely was that it's been a pain in the proverbial butt to log in and open all those unread messages. The loading process in hotmail takes a little longer than in other, less fancy E-mail accounts. Namely, forever.

I'm thrilled to let go of that time consuming worm.

My speed is not extra fast, so for me it's pretty damn convenient that I won't have to spend several minutes on logging in, waiting for the page to load, opening messages and then waiting for them to load. The fact that I'm logged into Google Account pretty much most of the time is just plain handy.

So, to sum it up, I'm very happy about making that change. It's like switching from Internet Explorer to Mozilla for the first time. Liberating.

How to replace an image in your layout

Some of you might have noticed the Extra Sets of Images added to Coverday's new layouts. They were made to add to the variety and give more freedom to our users. What that means is that now you can take images you want to go and replace them with the ones that suit your taste better. It's fairly simple and here I will show you what you need to do to replace any existing image you have in your layout.

The "What"

If you're going to replace an image, you need to locate its URL in your Template's code and replace it with your own URL.

The "How"

Open your Blog in Firefox and go to:

Tools - Page info - Media

In the list of image files used for the design, locate the one you want to replace and remember the final part of its URL.

E.G. Img URL: http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq229/Blogs/Designs/apswt-15.png

Go to:

Blogger Dahsboard - Layout - Edit HTML

Use Firefox page search to find original image name (apswt-15.png).

Once you found it, you will see the entire URL. All that's left to do is replace it with your image URL. If you already have the link, just copy and paste it in place of the original URL. If not, upload it to some server like Photobucket and copy paste it into your Template code.

Preview and Save the changes. That's it.

Here's a sweet bit of news for you.

Presented to you, straight out of the oven, Apple Sweet Blogger series!

The first of the series has been published just today and is waiting for you to download it. But you won't have to wait long for its follow-ups. The remaining layouts from the series would be posted very shortly, along with some extra images available for download.

Pink and purple, white and black. Wisely selected color schemes would be mixed together and handed out to choose from. You will have several header images to suit your taste better, and even backgrounds would come in variations.

Playing with layouts' replaceable image files is a very good way to learn Blog design, and I'm sure you will enjoy this fun little drill.

How to add RSS to your Blog (for Blogger)

Lucky for all you Blogger users, you guys already have RSS feed. All you have to do is link to it for your visitors to subscribe. You have two options for that:

1. Go to Blogger - Dashboard - Layout, and press Add Gadget. You would be able to browse Gadgets menu and what you need is find Subscription Links. This is a pretty simple way of adding RSS feed links to your blog.

2. Other way to do it is by linking directly to your RSS URL. That is fairly simple. To link to your posts RSS feed, type /feeds/posts/default after your blog url. To link to your comments, type /feeds/comments/default

School Hard - Learning DW CS4

Slumping in defeat, that's what I would be doing right now if I was living in a perfect world of indolence and regretlessness.

I'm starting to believe that Dreamwaver CS4 was written by some chronic women hater, because it goes deliberately against my girl logic and beliefs. WYSIWYG is supposed to be about SIMPLICITY, about getting what you see. I swear it was the plan!

Blogger Layouts are coming out with images now!

Great news for all Coverday (ex-Luxury Designz) Blogger layouts users. Now our layouts are coming out zipped! Well, rared actually, but it's less important. What important is that now along with the templates, you will get the images too!

It's especially swell (that's right, I just used "swell") for the City Lights layout users. I noticed that, for some reasons, on several blogs the posts' images are not showing. So far, I really can't figure out why, since the images seem to be in place on the test blog, working and showing whenever I use them.

Oh, well! Guess it's a mystery.

What to do with this information?

If one of the images on your blog stopped showing, go to the rar folder u downloaded from Coverday, unzip it and find the missing image. Upload it to some server like Photobucket. (I wouldn't advice Picasa. It's mean to websites.)

When you are done, to replace the image, search for its name in the code of your layout in blogger. Just type it into the Mozilla Firefox search (ctrl+f). E.g. connexion-meta.png.

Once you found it, replace it with your freshly uploaded image url. Preview your blog and then save the changes. It's as simple as that.

Fixing Common Java Errors

Whether you are just starting your first Java program, or you are a well experienced programmer, your code can not be an error free code and compile successfully from the first time. At the least you may confuse variable names, forget to declare a variable, or miss a semicolon.

Java language errors, just like all other programming languages, can be either syntax errors or logical errors. Syntax errors, also called compile time errors, are illegal use of statements in terms of programming language rules. When the compiler catches them it generates an error message indicating the class name, line number where the error is found, and the type of error. However, sometimes the actual error may not actually be in the line indicated in the message. You would want to look in and somewhere before these lines to locate the error.

This happens because syntax errors can be tricky sometimes; one error may lead to more than one error message. A missing semicolon for example causes the following one or more lines to be invalid, and thus generates error messages for all of them. Once you fix that error, all following messages will be cleared.

When writing a program with Java, syntax errors are almost unavoidable, so do not panic or get disappointed when you encounter them. Some of these errors are very common and you are very likely to encounter one or more of them when compiling your code. The fact is, you cannot avoid them. So the best way to deal with them is to get yourself familiar with them and know how to fix them. Below are some of the most common errors along with their solutions.

Capitalization Errors: Java language is case sensitive, variable names must be exactly the same, Total is not the same as total and not the same as toTal.

The file name is different than the public class name: The class should be saved in a file with exactly the same name; a Shirt class should be saved in a file named Shirt.java. Saving it to a different file name will give a compiling error.

Javac cannot find the class: When you save your classes, or source codes, they have to be in the very same directory where your javac.exe is. This file is responsible for compiling your codes and is created automatically when you download and successfully install the DSK machine. Generally you would install the SDK into your C: drive so there where your javac file will reside. Thus when saving your source code you need to save it in the C: directory in a folder named java.

"javac is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" (for Windows System) or "javac: Command not found" (for UNIX System): This means that your compiler cannot find your javac. This is due to one of two reasons, either you do not have a javac at all because you did not install the correct machine, or you did not set your PATH correctly. In this case you need to properly set your PATH, or you will have to type in the full file name path to execute it.

"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassFoundError: 'fileName': You probably misspelled the fileName, remember that java is case sensitive.

"Line nn: ';' expected": This means you moved to a new line without signaling to the compiler. When your string, or code line, is too long to fit in one line, you may want to split into two lines. Doing that just by pressing the Enter key will confuse the compiler and generate an error. Instead you will need to concatenate with a '+' sign. That is split your string into two lines, ending the first with a '+' before moving to the second line.

New Google Blog Search is Great Marketing News for Business Podcasts, Blogs and RSS Feed Publishers

Google just introduced Blog Search in beta yesterday. This new search function allows for you to search the internet for Blogs, Podcasts and RSS feeds. You simply type in your keywords and it will show you results that have come from these sources.

The results they display are not showing any preferences to Blogs that are published on Blogger. We are seeing results for all Blogging platforms. Actually Google Blog Search is not just looking at Blogs. They are looking for any RSS feed, which might be from a Blog, Podcast, or any other XML feed. It appears that the search tool is pretty responsive and we are seeing results show up in a matter of hours after a new post is made to the RSS Blog and Podcast Feed. This is another way that you can create online visibility for your business.

The organic results are sorted by relevancy, but you have the option to sort them by date as well. This is especially nice if you want to locate the latest post for a fast breaking news topic and want to find it quickly in the blogosphere. The other thing that Google has done is to try to eliminate some of the "noise" and Spam of the blogosphere. They are looking at high quality Blogs and show them at the top of the page under what is called "Related Blogs". This is prime real estate for your Blog to be listed in.

As an example: Go to the new Google Blog search ( http://blogsearch.google.com ) and type in podcasting tips. The results that are shown at the top 2 of the 3 Related Blogs happen to be authored by me. You will also see over 1600 results and we have several additional results on the front page. This is because we are writing 6 quality Blogs and publishing quality content frequently to these Blogs. http://blog.podblaze.com

Google currently does not support a manual submission for your Blog feed. I think this is smart, since it keeps the unethical people out of the picture. If you are Blogging or Podcasting properly and following best practices; your feed will be found by Google. Make sure that you are also following best practices for pinging after your feed is updated. This will ensure that your feed is updated by Google.

It looks like Google started to index Blogs, Podcasts and RSS feeds in June of 2005. They are currently not showing posts that were made previous to this. They may change this in the future. Google has found a way to somewhat keep the black hat SEO and unethical Bloggers out of the results. We can all celebrate this; because this means quality and relevant results for searchers.

Podcasters should also take note that individual podcast shows are also being listed in the results. This is a great way for users find your podcasts and individual podcast shows, based upon specific topics and content.

(Hey, I can’t help growing as a person!) So I felt that crazy urge to start “building stuff” and wipe away all the traces of the old by changing things. The site, the design, the stuff I work with… You get the idea. So that’s what I did. Say good-bye to Luxury Designz and…

Welcome to COVERDAY.

Don’t freak out. We look different. We smell different. We might even remind you of bubble gum with cherry flavor (that’s what all that pink does to you). We don’t have many updates yet, but only because I’ve been too busy working on the site construction. Now that that is done, I’ll focus on my works and tuts.

'Lorem ipsum dolor' is the first part of a nonsense paragraph sometimes used to demonstrate a font. It has been well established that if you write anything as a sample, people will spend more time reading the copy than looking at the font. The "gibberish" below is sufficiently like ordinary text to demonstrate a font but doesn't distract the reader. Hopefully....

Rick Pali submits the following from Before and After Magazine (Vol.4 Nr.2):

"After telling everyone that Lorem ipsum, the nonsensical text that comes with PageMaker, only looks like Latin but actually says nothing, I heard from Richard McClintock, publication director at the Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, who had enlightening news:

"Lorem ipsum is latin, slightly jumbled, the remnants of a passage from Cicero's _de Finibus_ 1.10.32, which begins 'Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...' [There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain.]. [de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC, is a treatise on the theory of ethics very popular in the Renaisance.]

"What I find remarkable is that this text has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since some printer in the 1500s took a galley of type and scambled it to make a type specimen book; it has survived not only four centuries of letter-by-letter resetting but even the leap into electronic typesetting, essentially unchanged except for an occational 'ing' or 'y' thrown in. It's ironic that when the then-understood Latin was scrambled, it became as incomprehensible as Greek; the phrase 'it's Greek to me' and 'greeking' have common semantic roots!"

How to use and edit player codes

This is an example of a customized playlist code for a Playlist.com player. I merely share my own designs here and am not affiliated with the Playlist.com in any way.

You can copy-paste it into your blogger sidebar, MySpace profile ("About me" area) or any other place that would accept this code. In other words, pretty much anywhere.

Important notes about the code above:

1. This is a no-autostart shuffling player. To change your player options, find a "config_black_noautostart_shuffle.xml" row in the player code and delete the "noautostart" to make your player autostart, and "shuffle" to stop your player from mixing your songs. You could also change the color of the text to white from black and vice versa easily, by typing in your desirable color.

If you do all of the mentioned above, your code would look like this: "config_white.xml" instead of "config_black_noautostart_shuffle.xml"

2. The players here do not have your playlists in them. To put your playlist into the player code, simply copy the number of your playlist from the website (Every playlist has a unique number. It's hidden in the Embed code playlist.com gives you) and insert it into the code I gave you instead of a number offered by default.

E.g. playlist=45503539 to playlist=yourplaylistnumber

3. Right now all players are aligned to center because they look better that way pretty much wherever you put 'em. To change the player alignment, in the beginning of the code change "center" to "left" or "right" in the div align="center" part of the code.

IMPORTANT NOTE

All players here were made out of the OLD playlist.com codes. So they looked a little different when they were first made. Also, the screenshot above might no longer apply, since, due to the changes playlist.com made, some pages and codes look different now. Yet, we are still using old codes here. Hope they still work for you.
